I used the bathroom while wearing my baby. Yes. I sat on the toilet and did what I had to do while my sweet, beautiful, 4 week old babe was snugly wrapped in a baby carrier, resting on my torso.

Thankfully, she was sound asleep, her head against my chest, breathing heavily, making her adorable little faces that babies make in their sleep. She will have no memory of this potentially traumatic and certainly dreadful act. Not that any part of her was touched or harmed by said bathroom activities, but still.

I have no great explanation for this occurrence, other than my poor insides have been suffering since giving birth and I’ve been taking the necessary supplements to return to regularity. And my sweet, beautiful, 4 week old babe refuses to be set down. And by “refuses”, since she clearly can’t yet use her words, I mean screams incessantly. Like she might die if I don’t pick her up. And, maybe because I’m so new at this and not yet confident in my mothering, I can’t take it. I am certain that letting her scream in clear agony must make me a bad mom. So baby wearing was the answer to my prayers!

I neglected to consider, prior to attaching said baby to myself, thus inducing her peaceful slumber, what to do if the urge hit.

And so, a quick and potentially poorly thought out decision was made. And I must say, as the event took place, I wasn’t sure if my actions qualified me as appalling and unfit to be a mother, or as an efficient and resourceful example of how to adapt to the inherent challenges of life with a newborn.

The jury is still out.
